When Tayl opened his eyes he was no longer in the Summer Sea. Above him the night sky opened into a velvet cloth punctuated by countless tiny lights. He raised his hands and experimentally curled and uncurled his fingers. His skin was covered in golden dust, as were his anorak and his trousers. He felt no cold nor pain. His body felt light, almost insubstantial, an empty shell harbouring whatever was left of what had been before.

He pushed himself up into a sitting position. He was in the centre of a stone circle. Around him, tall grasses stretched over a silver-lit plain until landscape and night sky met on a far-away horizon. He stood and brushed himself off. There was something he needed to do. Somewhere he needed to go. To his right, a path led from the grasses onto the stone. It crossed the centre of the circle and continued on the opposite side.

Should he turn right or left?

A breeze tugged on his clothes, giving him the slightest push toward the path on this left.

Left then.
